Volunteer Stories – Michael

I applied to volunteer with Keynsham Mencap in 2011 with the intention of gaining some experience in a health care setting before starting a degree in Occupational Therapy. The degree hasn’t happened yet, but several years later I’m still here!

Once a week or so I help with group activities ranging from trips to the climbing centre, bowling or a meal, to staying at base with games nights, crafts etc. There are also several holidays away each year that really are some of the most rewarding things I’ve done.

The best thing about volunteering is that members are really welcoming and are always interested in what you’re up to as well as telling you about themselves.

To anyone considering a career in healthcare, whether that’s nursing, physio or even medicine where experience is a requirement, Keynsham Mencap is a great place to get that experience as volunteer positions are regular, ongoing and easy to fit around most commitments. That said, there is no such thing as an average volunteer and are from different educational, family and work backgrounds.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Laura by emailing laura@keynshammencap.org.uk or phoning 01179 865659, or you can apply online by clicking the button below. We would love to hear from you!
